Most of the time I take a block of briar straight to the sanding disc, sometimes before I even sketch a line, just to see what the grain reveals. This one started that way. I had it half-shaped before I realized it was becoming a Blowfish, and I just ran with it. The shaping happened in a late-night flow state, then it sat for weeks while I puzzled out how to face the shank on my lathe with such a steep bend. It took three different cuts to keep the teardrop wide and true.
The mammoth was a special piece — the sides show the stabilized cracks that come with age, while the face is flawless, with striking grain patterns running through it.
